Most smartphone users today find fault in short battery lives and end up keeping a portable or iPhone 5s car charger with them at
hand. Here are some facts on why, after a typical usage duration of 8 hours,
most smartphone devices would already scream for a recharge.
The touchscreen feature has become a huge trend in smartphones today compared to the traditional keypad
and screen combination that we used to have. These touchscreen phones need more
back-light for their display. Moreover, the higher definition the screen is, the
more power the device consumes.
One of the notable features
of a smartphone is its ability to track the user’s whereabouts using Global
Positioning System or GPS. GPS drains your phone’s battery life whenever you’re
moving from one place to another since it tries to pick up the signals from
satellites to locate your exact location.
The application and base-band
processors are the two essential microprocessors in a
smartphone. The phone’s network is
controlled by the base-band while the apps, programs, audio, media files and
screen interface are managed by the applications processor.
Today, applications and downloadable programs
have become an integral selling point in smartphones. Playing
interactive apps like 3D games and programs that are heavy on the graphics
would require powerful processors. The more powerful the cores and the more
processors you use, the more power-hungry the devices are. Before, a single applications processor can
only be used but they have now developed the capacity of having two or more for
multiple programs. This increase of running processor cores contributes to the fast draining of a smartphone’s battery life.

Furthermore, whenever your phone’s
LTE, 4G, 3G or Wi-Fi is turned on, the device would consistently
search for all base stations that would provide a good signal. Even if it’s not
in use, it would automatically search for the strongest connections and thus
lower your phone’s battery life. It also heightens its
depletion whenever you’re on the move because the phone will pick up several
stations, even those with weak signal, and constantly change. This would
naturally consume more power.
